I has a nook! Chris got it for me for Christmas. It's not a color one, though he gave me the option of taking it back and exchanging it for one. I deliberated over that for a while and came to the conclusion that the things I would do above and beyond what this one does can be done on my phone.

It's a hard choice to make: reading on the beach and in bright light without a glare vs. reading in bed without a book light. But after devouring the final 150 or so pages of a book that's been sitting unfinished in my queue for almost a year, I'm absolutely mesmerized by the ink screen! Zero eyestrain, totally like reading a written page. It's rather uncanny.

The other drawback I considered was the whole periodicals/children's books thing and I think I'm alright not having those. The children's books would be really cool, but Jonah got his own nifty reading device for Christmas (the Leapfrog Tag thingy which he loves so much we've already gone through a set of batteries), so whatevs.

I took the liberty of ordering a 16GB micro SD card for my phone with one of the many Amazon orders before the holidays. So, now the 8GB card I just pulled out of my phone is residing in the nook completely loaded down with music and I have everything working again (the nook doesn't like files it doesn't recognize and hangs up when trying to scan new content until you get rid of offending files, I've learned). I've also loaded up the ~250 ebooks I already had on my laptop plus downloaded any of the free offerings from B&N that looked interesting. BOOOOOKKKKSSSS!!

So, if you don't hear from me much for the next year or so, I'm probably attempting to make my way through all of that. I'm still trying to wrap my head around carrying a library on this little device which is easier to handle, lighter and thinner than a trade paperback. And holy cow what a battery life! It's AWESOME! And just in time. As I began reading Francine Prose's Reading Like a Writer, I knew reading more was key to regaining the inspiration I need to continue to write. I've done almost no reading this year. That's about to change, big time!

I'll still buy dead tree books. I can't get around that. I have an obsession with books as objects. Though this device makes it more convenient for me to devour the words in them, it will not replace my desire to have them on the shelf to physically hold and flip through their pages.

Well, off to bed... TO READ!

If you are ever in the market for an eReader GET A NOOK! That way we can all lend each other books. :)

It seems like everyone I know has an ebook reader these days. I'm still holding off until they get waaaaaay cheaper. I've got too many gizmos I'm not fully using to justify any purchase like that in the near future. I am very interested, though, in the idea of no eyestrain. That's what bothers me about reading ebooks on my pc, though the netbook isn't quite as bad about it.

Love this post so much!

Before we got the Nooks Ron was like "I'll never stop buying actual books!" but now he's like "I'm lever buying another book again!"

He cracks me up sometimes. :)
