Like I mentioned to Sarah in my comments on the last post, I've found a navy habotai on ebay for about $7/yd (including shipping). I can look on the bright side that I don't have to undo a lot of work that I'm really not happy with (I never attached anything to the undergown, so in a way, I stopped in a good place).
Another bottle of navy Rit should darken the overgown. It's ok as is, but enough to bug me, so I'm going to try. The good thing is, it can never be too dark.
The trim I wanted to use on the mantle is bugging me, too. In some lights, the red background has this pinkish tint to it. Next to the purplish-navy velvet, it looks even more so. I want to downplay any pink tones in the gown, so I'm looking for something else. Found 3 yards of a gold/bronze brocade trim for $12 from Heritage Trading. No bullion or beading, but that's ok, it almost looked too heavy next to the bullion trim on the gown anyway and I really don't want to take away from the gown at all. I will definitely need a mantle or cloak for Indy, so I might as well work on it.
I won the two bullion appliqués from Heritage Trading. They should be on the way to fill in the gaps where I'm short trim on the gown.
Was never able to find a gold pen locally, so I'm just ordering one from Dharma. I bet they love me right about now.
And to get the rest of the tools I need for setting the moonstones for buttons. I'll work hard on Chris' this week and try to get some major progress done on it. I didn't even really get started on his.
Have more tests to do on the grey velvet. All my tests are coming up lavender. Charcoal grey dye makes lavender? I'll never understand it. I even tried getting black Rit (didn't think it would work but tried) and it came up about the same color of lavender. I'll keep testing while I'm waiting on a swatch of grey silk velvet from Distinctive Fabrics. It's $17/yd, but if it works, it's worth it not to mess with another dye failure.
The budgets for these costumes have totally gone out the window.
Bart: We were just planning the father-son river rafting trip.
Homer: Hehe. You don't have a son.

too little, too late
Oct. 31st, 2005 01:22 pmIn a very small, insignificant way, I'm kind of proud of myself for how much I was able to accomplish in just two short days. In a lot more ways, though, I'm very disappointed in myself for the work I should have been doing on it months ago when I first started collecting materials. I could have dyed and painted the paisley in July. I could have finished the mockup in June or July. But, hindsight is 20/20 and all that.
And so, I was too bummed Saturday night to go out or even call
branflake to let her know I wasn't coming out (and that's especially why I suck). In fact, yesterday, all I could do was just wander around the house aimlessly trying to gather my thoughts (lack of sleep doesn't help that). Luckily, Halloween was just an excuse to wear the finished costumes. I was making them regardless, but it would have been nice to have them done. I should have given up earlier in the night and just gone out, knowing I'd have to answer a hundred, "where are your costumes" questions.
Now I've got 2.5 weeks until we go to Indy to get things finished up. And after this is all over with, I'm never putting deadlines on my hobbies again. It takes all the fun out of it, stresses me out for no good reason, and is a huge let down when I fail, not to mention a kick in the stomach to my self-esteem.
Here's what I did get done. The undergown looks awful! I can't wait to replace it (fabric on the way). It wasn't an entire loss though, I used the spare habotai (the purple stuff) to dress a window that needed it. The overgown will get another dip in navy dye before it's all said and done (I want it almost black, it's showing up about right in pics, but far too purplish-blue in person), and the sleeves are looking a lot more orange in pics than they really are (I'm actually happy with that part of it, though it could stand to be a little more muted, maybe a couple more hot water washes).
On the plus side, I watched a ton of movies this weekend. Crash, Sleepy Hollow, War of the worlds (worst. ending. EVER.), Snatch, Nightmare before Christmas, and there's probably another one in there somewhere. Movies worked well to keep me going, better than cartoons because they're longer, and surprisingly, better than music.
Treehouse of Horror XVI is on this weekend.
I'm living in a dream today.
