For those of you wondering, yes, I do exist outside of Twitter and direct email and comments on other people's LJ or responses to my Facebook status updates (which are just regurgitated tweets). I've even been keeping up with everyone fairly well. But I've got a backlog of things I want to put up here. I know a couple of the entries will take a little while to hammer out, so I've been avoiding them in order to work on things that were more important like OMG 1ST CRAFT SHOW EVAR! Now, most of that is over and I've got a couple of weeks of normal busy before OMG JONAH'S 3RD BIRTHDAY hits. So, I'm going to try to knock those out in the next few days.

In the meantime, what I've been up to:

A list, yay! )

I don't even know why I try to write out costuming plans. As soon as I get a plan and start to set it to motion, I decide to change it. I'm thinking about Halloween. I really want to do Maleficent and if I want to do her this year, I'm going to have to get started collecting things. Which means I'm not going to do Hermione for Dragon*Con because my budget does not have room for both. Hermione was kind of a throw together anyway and my heart wasn't in it. But Maleficent! There's a project I can sink my dragon teeth into!
Yes! :)

I'm going to add in some time here and there to research Maleficent. I've only got a few reference pictures, but I've watched several clips and tributes on YouTube (all of which seem to be done to heavy metal, heh). I want to go all out for her. Yellow sclera contacts, a latex or silicone chin appliance to elongate my face a bit, making her staff with a yellow crystal ball at the top, a taxidermy crow/raven (there are several on ebay that are foam bodies done in black chicken feathers under $20) and of course that lovely, huge black cabochon ring on her right hand. But since she's a cartoon. Not everything works in real life, so I'm going to have to do some interpreting. Fabrics are kind of my choice on this one too, which is sort of fun but drives me nuts at the same time.

Maybe I could make one of her little demon minions for Jonah, heh.

Anyway, I'll be elaborating on all of this very soon. I just don't have the time for it today.

Ok, so I'm being a post whore today, so sue me.

We've got several costumed events coming up (four off the top of my head but two sets of costumes needed) and I feel bad that I always put a ton of time and effort into my costumes, but because Chris doesn't really care, we wind up throwing something passable together out of bits and pieces in the closet at the last minute. As such, I think I'm going to set aside the Angel gown for the moment and focus on his costumes for these events. I have other stuff I can wear after all and he doesn't. I'm trying to think of things I could possibly throw together in the next three weeks. I know I've made him a shirt before in less than a week without doing a mockup and I've already got a pattern for one if I want to do that one again. I'd like to get a hold of this pattern and try that one instead though, maybe minus the collar. I'll run it by him. I could even make it out of muslin (what I've got right now is a heavy unbleached muslin that would work well). I've also got 3-4 yards of black silk velvet that could be made into a surcoat for him and I even have Gondorian looking trim to go on it in black, gold and silver. Pants I would buy (thinking about the velvet pants at Museum Replicas). Boots I would buy too, except I'm not sure how much we have to spend on this stuff right now. I've got a long D-ring belt as well.

Now, that takes care of two events. Then there's Halloween. I decided I didn't want to sew for Halloween after scrambling to finish costumes for ALEP and thought we could do pirates, since I started collecting things for them for Ren Fest earlier in the year. I've got my ensemble done, with the exception of some details, but we could use a vest, some boots and some details for his costume. Again, I've got plenty of belts (even though my pirate belts are kind of crappy). We could use some weapons and maybe a tricorn hat. I'd like to get nice stuff, but I'm not feeling the need to spend a lot of money right now (there's a great hat on Ebay I've watched for a while, but it's $35, which is not expensive, except for all the other bits and pieces we need to get right now). I might just take a trip to Party City and see what they've got. I'm sure pirates are still a popular costume this year, so I should be able to find something decent.

Then there's Jonah. Chris agreed to do pirates only if I dress Jonah as a parrot. Yes, a parrot. And holy cow, I actually found one! I could add some feathers to complete the effect and be done with it! Freakin' awesome! I thought I was going to have to wrack my brain and come up with something creative, heh.

Well, I was sewing right up until about 6:30 last night and still have a little bit of trim to put on the neckline, but nothing was missing that anyone but me would notice. I've decided to insert a zipper in the overgown as well, it's quite difficult to get on, though not quite as hard to take off. At some point today I plan to add the last bit of trim and wear it again this weekend to the Drachenburg Folklore Festival Sunday. At that time, I'll get pics. Last night by the time I got dressed, it was just too dark. Eventually I want to use something else to sew this trim on. The metallic thread I used is very scratchy against my skin. In fact, I had little red marks on my arms where it rubbed. Other than that, it was fairly comfortable to wear, and perfect weather for it. I could see where if I tried to wear it in warmer weather it might be a little less comfortable. I'd like to get a different shaper to wear underneath too, maybe one of the one's with shorts at the bottom instead of just the skirt type one I have now. It tends to ride up and become uncomfortable and I find myself adjusting it frequently. I definitely want to put skirt hitches and probably even sleeve hitches in eventually as well, especially for things like trying to eat, or hold a squirmy infant.

After some trick-or-treating, we went to the Warner Parks to join up with some of the Tennessee Fellowship and Nashville Smial. They're a great group and very welcoming. I'm glad to live in a city where there are people that do things like this. In Huntsville, there just wasn't much outside of the SCA group and I was just never very interested in joining the SCA there. Marie, Kathryn and Rebecca I met a couple of weeks ago when we went to see Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Everyone else was new to me. Louis was wearing a chain maile shirt that he made himself that was really fantastic. They had a nice roaring fire going and lots of great food. Jonah was a big hit in his gnome costume. Chris got some pictures before we left the house. His entire outfit was thrown together yesterday evening. I was gluing his pointy hat at like 5pm or something. Hopefully someone will post the pictures they took from our gathering last night. As I was talking to Kathryn as we were leaving, she mentioned wanting to do something like this every year about this time, to kind of balance the year's events with the Ren Faire in May. I think it would be fantastic, especially if we could do it on a weekend to utilize some daylight hours for things like maybe a nice hike or something. The parks are really lovely, and bonus, they're like 2 or 3 miles from our house!

Steffany and Lilly came up as well. Lilly was dressed as Nagaina from Rikki Tikki Tavi. Steff did a fantastic job on a tough costume to accomplish. She used a baseball cap with styrofoam and covered it with black sequin fabric to make it look like a cobra's head. She put the little swirl markings that Nagaina had and painted some eyes on the top, then using pipe cleaners formed a forked tongue and attached it to the bottom of the bill of the hat. She wore a black leotard and Steff made a cape-like attachment out of the sequin fabric to look like a snake. Steff brought a corset and raided my closet to come up with a gypsy costume. She looked great, too! Chris wore a peasant-type shirt I made him a few years ago and the vest from our wedding. We threw together a "cloak" out of 3 yards of black silk velvet I had in my stash. It wasn't even hemmed, just a clasp at the neck and that's it. I had a hemmed piece of navy silk velvet to use as a cloak, but I never felt the need. I was quite comfortable in the dress itself.

We had a really fun time and even though there are still a couple of stray things to finish, I'm so glad to have this costume crossed off my list! Now, on to the Angel gown. . .

Well, I know its hard to compete with Wes's big bash, I'm not really trying either. Not that I don't want to see what his Haunt is going to be like, from the pics I've seen its going to be great this year (sure he's glad to be back at Lowe Mill). Maybe I'll check it out one of the other days that weekend. But, I just want to have a nice evening among friends in the woods with a huge bonfire to keep us warm, maybe a drum circle for energy flow, costumes would be great, and beer a must. So how about our place?

The past couple of months have been so hectic, I feel like we've been going non-stop. I'd just like some time to kick back with the people I care about and have a good time, and from who I've talked to about the idea, there are some folks who feel the same. But I do want people to dress up! That's my favorite part of the holiday, so I'll be damned if I'm going to miss out on that. So if you're looking for something a little different, or if you just plan to go to Wes's another night, feel free to come sit by the fire and share some joy with us. I'll post directions closer to time.
