So, we're headed to Cincinnati this weekend for the National Homebrewers Convention. Since the brew club decided to do a smoked beer theme for our booth at club night, we decided to call it "Smokey Mountain Breakdown". So, we're all dressing like hillbillies. Chris ordered some straw hats that came with corn cob pipes and everyone is to wear overalls. Except, I know for a fact that I look god awful in overalls, so I'm refusing.
As a next best thing, I originally said I'd dress up like Daisy Duke (except with slightly longer shorts, cut at high thigh, not at butt cheek). The only problem is, most of what I see her wear in the pictures I'm able to find are mid-drifts. I just don't have the figure for that. Besides, I'm not going to wear a wig or dye my hair for this and I don't want to be confused for trying to look like the Jessica Simpson version (which is just heresy in my book).
So, I've changed my mind and I think I'm going to go as Elly May Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies. With the skinny cut jeans that are popular right now, it shouldn't be hard to find a pair and cut off the hem and fray them a bit. Wear a piece of frayed cord or rope as a belt, find a fitted plaid blouse (shouldn't be hard in a town where there's a western wear store on every corner of Broadway near 2nd Ave) and wear my hair in low pigtails and I'm good. I'm not going to go to the trouble of trying to make my hair all poofy and curly. I don't have to look just like the character, just adequately hillbilly enough to fit in with the group. If they'll allow it, I'd like to go barefoot. The one episode I watched this morning on You Tube showed her wearing some sort of loafers. I might get a cheap pair at a thrift store or something just in case they won't let me go barefoot. I think Elly May is going to fit in nicer with the group than Daisy Duke would anyway. If there aren't enough straw hats to go around (he got 4 and there are 6 people going), I have a brown leather hat with a wide, floppy bill that would work nicely, I think.
I've also got to be on the lookout for some hillbilly accessories for the booth itself. On the list to gather/look for:
Pink flamingo patio lights and yard decorations
A clothes line with some old socks or something
Old lawn chairs (missing parts a plus)
Jugs with XXX on them (or jugs that could have that added and resemble 'shine vessels)
Flower pots with artificial flowers "planted" in them (would be better if the flowers looked sun-bleached)
An old hub cap or two
Our "Ice cold beer on tap" tin sign that looks rusted at the edges (Chris' dad got it for us at a flea market, but we're too embarrassed to put it up in the house, it looks really tacky)
Wind chimes made from unorthodox materials (wire hangers, old silverware, etc.)
We're sharing a booth with another club so I'm not sure how much room we'll have for such things. I know we've gotten a banner printed for the front of the table. If we could put it up with some contraption of clothespins and wire hangers, that would be pretty awesome. I just need to cruise the thrift stores, Party City, the dollar stores and Cracker Barrel for appropriate items. Seems like that will be my mission for tomorrow while Jonah is at preschool.
