Running Week 5

Last week was a week of listening to my body and doing what it thought it could do, instead of the scheduled runs. Nothing went as planned and I only got 4 days in, but some excellent progress was made. I'll take that happily.
Monday - 1 mile straight run; 1.79 miles in 22:06; 11:12 min mile
Tuesday - rest
Wednesday - rest
Thursday - 1.44 mile straight run; 1.96 miles in 23:27; 1st mile 11:24, 2nd .44 mile 4:07
Friday - 1.9 mile straight run; 2.53 miles in 29:17; 1st mile 10:38 (PR), 2nd .9 mile 9:27
Saturday - ~4.5 mile hike in 2:48:00 (Mossy Ridge trail in Percy Warner Park)/2 mile straight run; 2.53 miles in 30:16; 1st mile 11:09, 2nd mile 11:21 (logged approx. 7 total miles this day give or take)
Sunday - rest
Mileage Totals:
Week - 13.45
Month - 15.98
Year - 40.55
This week, I'm running 5 days of 2 mile runs and a retry of week 1 of the 5k program. I'm seeing where skipping out on the shorter runs the week before the race was detrimental. Not logging that mileage set me back and even though I had done 1.5, 1.75, 2 and 3.2 mile runs that week, I couldn't squeeze out so much as a 2 mile run last Friday and even earlier last week couldn't hack it. Saturday was tough too, but I was insane and went after a moderately strenuous 4.5 mile hike and a heavy lunch of Chinese food. My legs were fine, but it felt like I had just done 100 crunches before running and/or someone had my stomach in their hands and was squeezing making it difficult for me to breathe. I know J-9 has said this before, but don't skip out on your shorter runs during the week. You might think you can get by with just the increases, but that mileage really does mean something! I should have gone back and redone week 8 of the primer before trying to move on to the 5k plan. Live and learn.
In the middle of last week, after two consecutive days of rest, something clicked and I got all antsy and energetic. It was kind of like a caffeine high, except I have been trying to cut back on my intake so I don't think it was. It would have been my third day off in a row (Thursday). I had to go to the grocery for something after putting Jonah to bed and while I was out, I noticed it wasn't unbearably cold (probably in the 40s). I got home at 8:30pm and upon walking in the door, told Chris, "I'm going for a run" and just threw on my gear and went. I know now the antsy feeling was from not running for several days and I rested better than I had all week that night after a good run and a nice, hot shower.
Ever since then, I've been more motivated, energetic and faster paced (in day to day life, not so much my runs, though I have set two PRs in the past 4 days). I'm more driven and efficient and I've just felt better all around, mentally and physically. Everything is clicking into place and functioning like a well oiled machine. It's like someone flipped a switch and said, "ok, you're a runner now and your life is never going to be the same." This morning, after dropping Jonah off for school, I couldn't wait to get back out there and I set another PR on my second mile (10:35 with an 11:04 first mile). I'm excited to see how much easier 2 miles will be at the end of this week.
