I'm about to do some post spamming because when I try to put it all in one entry I can't make it coherent. Although, I'm not really promising coherence with separate posts either. :P

Today's arrivals included my new Arwen wig. As I expected, it is too curly. However, that's proving to be easy to remedy, simply by combing my hands through and separating the curls a bit. I'm going to get it all fluffed out, then put a bunch of small braids through it to get the desired waviness I want. Might stick it in the bathroom while I take a shower or something to help hang the existing curls out a bit and maybe again after it's braided to attempt to set in the waves.

I'm really going to have to get my hair cut now. I can't even try it on very effectively until I do (though I have played with it a bit, I can't even begin to fit my real hair under it). I was thinking of going with something like this.

The color of the wig is definitely more red than Arwen's probably should be, especially once I get it in the sunlight. However, it really works with my coloring. My old wig was too towards the black/blue spectrum and did not mesh well with my skin tone. Sometimes you have to go with what works with you and maybe moves a step away from the character. I think I mentioned something to that effect in a discussion about the color of Arwen's Coronation gown the other day on LR_Cos (shifting the color to make it flatter you rather than match the actual gown). So, I'm not fretting over the color as much as I thought I was when I pulled it out the package. Yay! A brunette color that works with me!

The length is fantastic! It's 40" at the longest, but has some layers. One small, although workable problem, the part is intended to go off to the side. Very far off to the side actually. As long as I cover the hairline as I style it, that should never become a problem. I think this wig will work with any Arwen style I might want to do except the pulled back/braided ones like the Chase and Battle costumes have. I think I could even work with it to get the Dream gown hairstyle out of it. Mental note: buy some bobby pins. I thought I had some but I don't.

The seller also has a blonde wig (as well as some crazy funky colors) in this style/length. Given the way the part is (aside from being on the side), the blonde would work beautifully for Galadriel or Eowyn.

Another mental note for Arwen: get more spirit gum and liquid latex.

I think list form will serve this one best. In no particular order:

1. Hoodie - arrived today. I'm a little disappointed. It's stretch velour. No where did I see it say velour. Also, being that it's a stretch fabric, it doesn't fit like I hoped it would. A little more form fitting than I planned. Oh well. I have not tried it on over the shirt it's intended to be worn over yet. That might help.

2. Shirt and dye - arrived first, last Tuesday I think. Was waiting until the hoodie got here to dye it to match. Will proceed with that now.

3. Wand - arrived Thursday or so of last week. A little disappointed by this as well. I got sick of losing auctions for the Noble Collection one so I just bought one of the cheap Chinese LED ones. Well, I shouldn't have skimped. It seems really big and very plasticy. Oh well, I can always upgrade later, I suppose.

4. Time Turner - not buying. I'm sick of losing auctions on this one too and I've only got so much left in my budget. So, for those of you that have one and will be at Dragon*Con and won't be needing the use of it for Sunday night, might I plead with you to borrow it for a few hours? Otherwise, I've got a gold chain that I could just keep tucked into my hoodie for a similar effect and just not bring it out. Or, I could say screw it and just skip it all together. How many people will notice, really? There again, I will want one someday, but I don't have the time or money for one now. Could really use a real Time Turner right about now.

5. GOLAS!!! - they're on their way and I can not wait to get them! This was the single most expensive piece of the costume, but I'm so excited about them! They're pretty much the reason I wanted to do this costume. I'm really not a pink kind of person. ;)

6. Belt - Making it, have about half the parts. I've got some 1.25" white cotton webbing for belts. I bought some 7/8" rainbow ribbon with the intention of folding/sewing under the blue and purple stripes and sewing that to the webbing for the same effect as the original belt. However, what I got is too narrow. So, in about 5 minutes (4, 3, 2. . .) I'll be winning an auction for some 1.5" in the same stripe configuration and I think that will do the trick. Then it's just to snag some D-rings and I can throw that together. I opted to ditch the accurate belt because, well, I just really didn't want to spend $50+ on a freakin' web belt. I really wanted to spend that money elsewhere. So, for about $15, I've bought enough materials to do 2-3 belts and might sell some extras to recoup even that cost.

7. Jeans - I plan to hit up the thrift stores this week to find a pair of hip-hugger bootcut jeans. No, I do not own a pair like this. I have one pair that I bought last year at a thrift store for the hillbilly costume at NHC. They are bootcut but sit too high I think. In a pinch they would work, but I've got a bit of budget left and wouldn't mind having another pair of jeans. I know, I'm an odd bird for only owning one pair of jeans. I mostly have twill or cords.

And that about does it for Hermione. Except that I'll be zombifying her. [livejournal.com profile] jkg_vader coined the perfect name: Zombione. Since this hoodie is kind of less than satisfying, I don't mind destroying it, just a little. It was pretty cheap too. I might try to find a stuffed cat to maul and bloody up (another great idea from [livejournal.com profile] jkg_vader). And then, some strategically placed dirt and the right makeup and I think I'll be able to complete the effect. Yes, I'm taking dirt to D*C. Ah, the weird things we do for costuming. I guess I could also run around saying, "I've got a jar of la-and!" in my pirate costume. ;) Why Zombione, you ask? This!

Another list form will work best here, too, I think.

1. Pirate - I have no idea when I'm wearing this yet, but I'm taking it. I've been working on shaping my tricorn. I had been avoiding it, knowing the brim needed some trimming and well, I was afraid to jump in and do it, thinking I'd probably screw it up. But, it's going well and it's really fun to do! Hats really are fun. I really think I have more fun in the accessories than the full costumes. Which makes me think I might want to open a second Etsy store, but. . . later. Anyway, I'm using Elizabeth's from Dead Man's Chest as a model and a wool felt hat blank from here as my base. It's pinned in place right now and I need to hand tack it where necessary then beat the crap out of it. Thinking dirt, mineral oil (or something like it), sandpaper and saltwater should do the trick.

2. Black Crinkle Gauze Fabric - I can't even remember how I ran across it now, but I found 5 yards of it on ebay and won it for under $14 shipped. WIN! Literally. :P I thought it might work for Lamia's sleeves, but I don't think so now that it's here. It's too thick, for one and also, I'm pretty sure now hers is silk gauze that's been distressed. However, I'm not regretting the purchase. While it slightly ate into my budget for current costumes and isn't even going to work for what I thought it was, well, I know I can use it for something, be it a chemise or blouse or two or a skirt or whatever.

3. Angel Gown - I'm pretty sure I'm procrastinating the Angel gown until it's too late to get it done. If it shows up at D*C, it will be a surprise to all of us, especially me. I just don't feel like working on it.

I thought there was more, but now I can't think, so I guess I'm done anyway.
