mellymellSo, I went to Nashville yesterday with Chris for his second interview at Vanderbilt. They put us up in the Embassy Suites there. Certainly can't complain about that. We got in at around 8:30 Wednesday night and since he had forgotten his dress shirt, took a tour of West End and Belle Meade on the way to and from a Target to get a replacement. There are so many awesome [looking] restaurants in that area! Then we went back to turn in for the night.
We got up and had a huge breakfast together (they have a guy that will make you omelettes, pancakes or fried eggs, in addition to a huge breakfast buffet). Then as he was getting ready for the interview, he got a call from another headhunter in Nashville and wound up with a second interview at an insurance company for the afternoon. Since checkout wasn't until noon, I went back to bed after breakfast. That was nice.

From there, we went to drive by where Chris's 2:30 interview was to be (near the airport) and then just sort of checked out that area while wasting the little bit of time we had before it. As he was at that interview, I drove around neighborhoods just to get a feel of what they were like and found a few houses for sale. There are some really nice neighborhoods in the Donelson area. We also checked out Antioch a bit. Then attempted to properly experience rush hour traffic in Nashville to get a feel for that.
With an offer on the table from one company in Brentwood, things sounding very promising for Vandy (though no offer made, and he'll still need to go back once more to speak with another person, good thing they're paying mileage) and another possible opportunity at the insurance company, things are looking like we'll be moving to Nashville in the next month or so (much sooner than I had anticipated).
We're now to the point where we're trying to figure out what the best way to relocate would be. Do we try to rent an apartment while we look for a house to buy? Do we just try to find an affordable extended stay place for that duration instead? Do we rent a house for a year, just to familiarize ourselves with the areas before buying? But I hate moving and so the best option to me is that we should start talking to a realtor and just find a place to buy and get it over with (I make it sound so easy don't I?). Just one move to make. But then there are uncertainties to deal with, like what if things don't work out and we're stuck with a house in Nashville? We have pets to consider, too. But I keep reminding myself, people make much bigger moves than this one, with pets and kids and so much more in tow, so it's not like this should be as difficult as I might be making it.
So, next question, mostly directed toward current and former Nashville residents. . . where are good places to live? Preferably where there are decent schools, the houses aren't on top of each other and we won't go nuts from long commutes. That may be too much to ask.
This is going to be a big deal for us though. We'll have to buy a second car for sure. Buying/renting a house/apartment with deposits/down payments and what not. The dust hasn't even settled from the wedding yet. And there's so much more to consider than this. It's a big time for us for sure. But that's what we get for dicking around for the past 6 years, I guess. As Chris said, we're just playing catch up now.

on 2006-05-19 05:50 pm (UTC)Find out what the real estate websites are for Nashville and start looking around online. If you want to be safe, rent a house or an apartment if you are really that afraid that the job may not work out. With the pets, though, I'm sure you may have some difficulty finding a rental property. As someone who is trying to get her house ready to sell and buy another one, I'm more inclined to buy. I would do it now b/c it looks like interest rates may go up to stem inflation. However, if the housing market really is slowing down, this may be a good time to buy as sellers will become more willing to accommodate to get the sale.

on 2006-05-19 06:05 pm (UTC)We've been all over Nashville's mls (which is awesome btw). I'm more concerned about where the good areas to live in are. You can't tell much about a neighborhood by a picture on an mls. Hell, half the time you can't tell much about the lot that the house is on by the pictures there (in one case there was a great house with something like 2 acres but it was right on a major road, like 20 feet from the road at that). We're kind of more inclined to buy as well, mostly because we've been renting for so long.
And even if this job doesn't work out, it seems there are tons of opportunities for someone with Chris' credentials. I'm more concerned about being content there, I guess. It's probably just a lot of cold feet really.
