Yesterday evening, as I walked out with the dogs, I spotted a Monarch butterfly struggling for life on one of my red zinnias. I guess he didn't make it to Mexico. It was fairly cold yesterday, so, I coaxed him onto my finger and carried him into the house, fully knowing he most likely had less than 48 hours of life left in him, if that. I transplanted him onto an orchid. He warmed up quickly and started fluttering about near the window. Mogwai, unfortunately, caught site of the fluttering and tried to attack him. He grabbed at him once, but I don't think it hurt him. He seemed fine all last night and this morning. I kept Mogwai away from him and coaxed the butterfly up high into the Bird of Paradise where he rested peacefully through the night.
This morning, as the house warmed and the grey light of another overcast day shone in the windows, he started his fluttering again. It's even colder outside today, so there's not a chance I was going to put him out. I knew full well his days or even hours were numbered anyway, why not keep him somewhat comfortable? Mogwai has been in and out today and I've mostly kept him busy and away from the area where the butterfly is. It was working pretty much all morning.
However, sometime right before lunch, Mogwai crept downstairs without me knowing. Jonah had been upstairs playing with me and had likely disturbed Mogwai from his resting place on our bed. Jonah mentions that he's hungry and wants lunch and being a little after 11am, I was alright with that (we all got up at 6:15am). As I round the corner to go check on the butterfly, I notice he was not where I last saw him. Then I look down at the floor to my right and there is a torn up butterfly carcass and a very happy looking cat.
I can't be mad at him for acting on his nature. For all I know, butterfly is a rare delicacy in Mogwai's world. But I can't help but feel like my efforts were foiled and I and the butterfly both were betrayed by the little bastard. Oh well. I rest in comfort that I gave him an extra 18 hours of life, most likely. Perhaps it was Mogwai's form of mercy to end his life quickly rather than have him slowly fade. At any rate, Jonah felt the need to put Mogwai in time out for his misdeeds. He yelled at him, "Mogwai, don't hurt butterfly, time out, 2 minutes!"
Would it be morbid of me to use what's left of the wings in some jewelry? ;)
