Escape from babytraz
Nov. 25th, 2008 07:26 amOn Sunday, Jonah escaped from his crib for the 4th or 5th time while protesting a nap. It was then that we decided it was time to swap out the railings on his crib for the "transitional bed" phase (toddler bed). While Chris was out in the garage brewing, Jonah and I worked on pulling off the high front railing and replacing it with the two shorter pieces that keep him from rolling out of bed in the middle of the night but allow him to get in and out of bed on his own. This has proved to be detrimental to nap time thus far, since he can also reach his light switch and is now free to hop out of bed and play at will. But when bedtime rolled around last night, he was more than ready to settle in for some rest. Yesterday, he slept in too, since it was dark and rainy outside, and that tends to rob him of a nap. Today he woke up at 8am on the dot and I'm hoping he'll nap better on today's more regular schedule.
Luckily he can't open his door, so he is at least confined to his room for now. But I was a little concerned about him feeling trapped by a closed door when he wakes up. He's always been a kid that didn't like to be confined, even in the newborn stage when we'd swaddle him (which is unusual and might be why I felt so many long stretches as opposed to short kicks in utero). I looked up some stuff about it and there were some recommendations to try a baby gate if problems arose from shutting the door. So, that's probably what I'll try if I see that he's not liking waking up and being trapped in his room. Kind of funny since he used to wake up trapped in his crib and didn't have a problem with being confined to that tiny space.
He turns 2 a week from Thursday, so I guess we're right on track as far as these things go. Most kids graduate to a toddler bed around their second birthday.
